Hiking with children and what to take with?

February 13th, 2012

Hiking with children is an affordable alternative to adventure parks and animated, expensive offerings. The animation of the children is entirely in the hands of the big fellow hikers and the adventures created in the minds of children.

It is best to start walking as soon as the first little step can be run. The baby carriers or slings in backpack form must then still with, but to walk in the forest and the discovery of a thousand little things on the forest floor, on the rocks and the trees must be learned from the mile-hungry parents.

With about the age of four, children can walk distances up to 10 km. Not in the pace of the greats, but such a trip fills really the whole day.

How to motivate the little hikers to move?

Here are some tips of our children:

  • a rope, perhaps as a climbing rope, for games such as: towing horse, branches, train travel
  • pocket knife
  • binoculars
  • Bucket or bag for all stones and sticks that need to be taken absolutely
  • compass
  • small books to determine of birds, animal tracks, plants

Depending on the interests and hobbies of the parents I recommend pencil and paper, a book to relax after a picnic and of course favourite cookies to be taken with you. But also puzzles and Sudoku are very popular with children.

When can my child wear his or here own backpack?

Our experience is that children up to 3 years and then again from the age of 8 years like to wear a own backpack. Here’s instinct nerves necessary. A six-year walkers is really hard to motivate to walk several miles, just because of the backpack that has to be on his or here back? Every parent should decide this for themselves.

The youngest ones are easy to attract with their own supplies. The older children are proud to wear their own camera, water bottle and walking map in her backpack.

The backpack should have necessarily a belly and a chest strap. The kids can so go carefree and climb. Sweats your child quickly, buy a backpack carrying system.

Anything else?

Depending on the weather forecast and the hiking distance, we recommend:

  • sun lotion
  • hat for sun protection
  • wind jacket and scarf
  • hiking boots (it need not be brand shoes)
  • plasters, bandages and creams (which also helps prophylactic)
  • picnic blanket

Food and beverages

  • water, tea, soda
  • mixed sandwiches
  • chopped vegetables and fruit
  • cubes of cheese, boiled eggs, sausages
  • yoghurt and fresh cheese

Have you thought of everything and packed up, we wish an enjoyable and adventurous time in the woods and fields!
